MYSTERIOUS POND
for flute, oboe and piano

An Evocative and Atmospheric Contemporary Trio for Flute, Oboe, and Piano
Mysterious Pond (2004) by Lior Navok is a 10-minute trio for flute, oboe, and piano composed during an artist residency at the MacDowell Colony. Inspired by the nocturnal sounds and atmosphere surrounding a nearby forest pond—frog peepers, birds, distant howls, shifting light, and rustling leaves—the piece unfolds as a continuum of interconnected musical scenes. Commissioned by the “Sons et Couleurs au Musée” concert series with support from the Canada-Israel Cultural Foundation, it offers performers an evocative and imaginative addition to the repertoire for flute oboe and piano.

About the Music
Mysterious Pond is a 10‑minute trio for flute oboe and piano composed during an artist residency at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire. Surrounded by forest and the nocturnal sounds of a nearby pond, the work unfolds as a continuous sequence of atmospheric scenes. Frog calls, rustling leaves, shifting light, and distant echoes become musical metaphors, shaping a landscape that moves from dusk into night and toward dawn. Written for the Carmel Trio, the piece blends coloristic writing with fluid motion, creating a vivid portrait of a living, breathing natural world. It is ideal for professional flutists, oboists, and pianists, as well as advanced students exploring color, blend, and atmospheric ensemble writing. The work fits perfectly into contemporary chamber concerts, woodwind‑and‑piano recitals, and programs centered on nature, nocturnal imagery, or continuous‑form works. It is most effective in intimate and medium‑sized halls.

  • PROGRAM NOTES

    Program Notes:

Mysterious Pond was composed during my artist residency at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire, USA.

From my studio, nestled amidst the forest, I could hear distant sounds emanating from the nearby pond: Frog peepers created a haunting sound texture, accompanied by the calls of nocturnal birds and distant howls. My mind started to imagine the pond and its mysterious atmosphere at different times of the day, especially from dusk to sunrise. I envisioned small episodes involving the water creatures, their sounds, the play of light, the rustle of the leaves, and the whisper of the water. All of these elements created a continuum of musical scenes, woven one into the other.

Mysterious Pond was written for flutist Eyal Ein Habar and oboist Dudu Carmel. It was commissioned by the “Sons et Couleurs au Musée” concert series (Er’ella Talmi, Director) with funds from the Canada-Israel Cultural Foundation.
