AT THE EDGE OF A SPIRAL
for piano four-hands
A Powerful and Evocative Contemporary Work for Piano Four Hands
At the Edge of a Spiral (2004) by Lior Navok is a 10-minute work for piano four-hands built around recurring motives that intensify as the piece progresses. Inspired by the story of a young man who took his own life, the music reflects obsessive momentum, emotional pressure, and a sudden collapse into a fragile music-box passage, as if capturing the inner world at the edge of a personal spiral. Written for and dedicated to the Silver-Garburg Piano Duo, the piece offers a powerful and evocative addition to the modern piano four hands repertoire.

About the Music
Built from a handful of recurring fragments, At the Edge of a Spiral traces a path of increasing momentum and pressure. What begins as a restrained, almost suspended motion gradually intensifies, the same material returning with greater urgency each time. Only at the end does the spiral break, giving way to a brief, delicate stillness—a music‑box echo that hovers at the edge of resolution. It is suited to advanced students and professional duos; the demands lie in ensemble precision and shaping long spans of intensifying motion. The piece is effective in contemporary recitals, thematic programs exploring tension or psychological narrative, or as a contrasting modern work within mixed programs. It stands as a strong choice for competitions valuing cohesion, pacing, and interpretive clarity, showcasing ensemble unity and stamina over its ten‑minute arc. This composition is particularly compelling in intimate halls where the balance of the piano four hands can be fully appreciated.
Program Notes
At the Edge of a Spiral for one piano, four hands, is a short journey of built intensity. It is based on a few fragments, motives that are illuminated in different lights each time. The piece starts slowly but increases its intensity and speed as it progresses, utilizing the same motives. While composing the piece, I heard about a young man who threw himself into the river. I tried to imagine what went through his mind and what had brought him to this dead-end. And again, the idea of built intensity, obsessive and uncompromising, came to my mind. At the very end of the piece, there is a sudden drop in intensity followed by a music box passage, as if describing what is going on in the person’s mind right after the jump, right after reaching the edge of his life’s spiral. At the Edge of a Spiral was written and dedicated to the Silver-Garburg Piano Duo – Sivan Silver and Gil Garburg. The generous support of Miriam and Eliezer Benbassat funded it.
