Light Paths for symphony orchestra portrays light through sound. At times, the light travels swiftly, akin to car lights on a highway; at other times, it moves slowly, resembling a faint glow emanating from a distant ship. The intensity of light varies widely, from a flickering candle to an intense beam that momentarily blinds the eyes. It can be direct or indirect, flickering, shimmering, dimming, intensifying, expanding, or focusing. It may be obscured by clouds or fog, only to reappear in altered forms or varying intensities. Light can take on different hues – white, blue, yellowish, or reddish – originating from different sources such as fire, electricity, or gas.

The first and third movements explore swift and direct light sources, while the middle movement delves into the mysterious interplay of near and distant light.

Light Paths was commissioned by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra with generous support from the Israel Ministry for Culture and Sport, “Kol Kore 2016.”
