AND THE TRAINS KEPT COMING...
an oratorio

An Holocaust-Related Contemporary Masterwork
And the Trains Kept Coming… (2007) by Lior Navok is a 44-minute oratorio for tenor solo, bass-baritone solo, two narrators, boy-soprano, choir, and orchestra. The work juxtaposes authentic historical documents—letters, memos, telegrams, testimonies, and bureaucratic correspondence—with personal accounts from Holocaust survivors, creating a powerful narrative that unfolds in one continuous movement. Through rapidly shifting scenes, the oratorio reveals the contrast between cold administrative language and the human suffering behind it, reflecting both the tragedy of the Holocaust and the broader human tendency to overlook the suffering of others. Commissioned by the Cantata Singers in Boston as part of their Slavery Documents series, the piece offers a profound and deeply moving contribution to the modern repertoire of the Holocaust Oratorio.

About the Music
And the Trains Kept Coming… is a 44‑minute oratorio composed in 2007, built from authentic wartime documents, letters, telegrams, testimonies, and bureaucratic correspondence from the Holocaust. The work juxtaposes the cold, administrative language of Allied and Nazi communications with the human voices of victims and survivors, revealing the devastating gap between official inaction and lived suffering. Structured as a sequence of unstaged scenes, the piece moves chronologically through historical events, with soloists, narrators, and chorus shifting roles to portray multiple perspectives. The result is a stark, immersive reflection on moral blindness, bureaucratic detachment, and the human cost of indifference.
