East of the Cane Fields (2001) by Lior Navok is an 8-minute solo harp work inspired by the movement and mysterious whistle of the cane field near Boston’s Fenway Park. Translating the visual effect of wind-blown canes into sound, the piece explores shifting textures, fluid motion, and atmospheric resonance. Written for harpist Franziska Huhn, it offers a modern, evocative addition to the contemporary solo harp repertoire.

About the Music
East of the Cane Fields translates the shifting motion of wind‑blown cane reeds into a fluid, evolving sound world for the instrument. The piece captures the shimmering, unpredictable movement of tall reeds as they bend, ripple, and whistle in the wind, exploring resonance, color, and continuous transformation. It is ideal for professional harpists and advanced students exploring color and fluid gestures. The composition works exceptionally well in contemporary solo harp recitals, nature‑themed programs, and competitions or auditions that value coloristic control, pacing, and expressive nuance. It is most effective in intimate and medium‑sized halls where resonance and detail can bloom.
 
Program Notes
East of the Cane Fields for solo harp is influenced by the cane field found in Boston’s Fenway Park. When blown by the wind, the canes move in such a way that produces a special visual effect and a mysterious whistle. The flexibility of the canes makes their movement change constantly from one direction to the other. I translated this visual effect into sound and applied it to the harp. East of the Cane Fields was written for harpist Franziska Huhn.
