THE SPANISH SONGS
for soprano, bassoon and chamber orchestra
An Expressive Contemporary Orchestral Song Cycle
The Spanish Songs (1998) by Lior Navok is an 11-minute work for soprano, bassoon, and chamber orchestra, setting evocative poems by Antonio Machado. Inspired by soprano Monica Garcia and a desire to contribute to the bassoon repertoire, the piece blends traditional musical elements with Navok’s personal interpretation of Spanish color and atmosphere. Scored for soprano, bassoon, two clarinets, harp, celesta, percussion, and strings, the work offers a vibrant and expressive addition to the contemporary orchestral song repertoire and the standard catalog for Soprano and Orchestra.

About the Music
The Spanish Songs serves as a unique dual showcase, pairing the lyrical power of the voice with the distinct, expressive capabilities of the bassoon alongside a refined chamber orchestration. Navok's selection of Antonio Machado's poetry establishes a rich text-driven foundation, guiding the music through specific moods, structural inquiries, and vivid seasonal landscapes. By opting for a traditional path infused with personal interpretations of Spanish musical elements, the composer delivers an atmospheric, deeply communicative work. It stands as a substantial, color-rich programming option for professional ensembles, university orchestras, and specialized vocal-orchestral contemporary recitals.
Program Notes
When I first heard soprano Monica Garcia sing, I was determined to compose a new work for her. Simultaneously, I was concerned about the decline of music written for the bassoon during the 20th century, and it was important for me to make my small contribution by writing a Bassoon Concerto. Somehow, these two intentions came together in The Spanish Songs. While searching for poems, I had specific criteria in mind such as subject, mood, and length. It was also important that one of the poems begin with a question. After eight months of searching, I found Antonio Machado’s poems. Poems and specific performers help the composer decide on the musical direction. Here, I chose to take a more traditional path, infused with my interpretation of Spanish music.
