VOICES FROM INDIA (STRING QUARTET NO. 1)
for string quartet

An Evocative Work for String Quartet
Voices from India – String Quartet No. 1 (1997) by Lior Navok is a 17-minute work inspired by the structures and aesthetics of Indian classical music. Organized in three movements—Alap, Gat, and Jhalla—the piece draws on ragas such as Rama Priya, Shyam, Jog, Suddha Vasant, and Suddha Sarang. Rather than imitating Indian classical music, this evocative string quartet integrates its distinct ideas and colors into the Western medium, offering a culturally rich addition to contemporary string repertoire.

About the Piece
The work grew out of an in-depth study of Indian classical music—its ragas, talas, and improvisational structures—and explores how these ideas can be reimagined within the Western chamber medium. Structured around the traditional sequence of Alap, Gat, and Jhalla, it blends modal melodic writing with rhythmic cycles and drone-based textures to create an expressive, cross-cultural sound world. It is ideal for professional ensembles and advanced groups exploring rhythmic cycles and stylistic fusion, fitting effectively into contemporary chamber concerts or recitals highlighting genre-blending string quartet works.

The Artistic Conception

The quartet is in three movements based on a typical form of Indian classical music. The Alap is a slow, un-metered introduction based on one main raga. The Gat movement is made of a ten-beat cycle (divided 2+3, 2+3) where rhythmic cycles are explored. Emerging from the Gat is the Jhalla, where the instruments accelerate into a very fast tempo using open drone textures that lead to a climax and conclusion. The quartet is an endeavor to bring Indian ideas and flavors into the Western medium. Voices from India is dedicated to Dr. Peter Row who has guided me through the concealed paths of Indian music.
