VOICES FROM INDIA (STRING QUARTET NO. 1)
DUTATION: 17 minutes
INSTRUMENTATION: violins (2); viola and cello
YEAR COMPOSED: 1997
VOICES FROM INDIA – String Quartet No. 1 (1997) by Lior Navok is a 17-minute work inspired by the structures and aesthetics of Indian classical music. Organized in three movements—Alap, Gat, and Jhalla—the piece draws on ragas such as Rama Priya, Shyam, Jog, Suddha Vasant, and Suddha Sarang. Rather than imitating Indian classical music, the quartet integrates its ideas and colors into the Western string quartet medium. Dedicated to Dr. Peter Row, it offers a culturally rich and evocative addition to contemporary string quartet repertoire.
