Charles Koechlin (1867-1950) had a unique voice in French classical music. It is a wonder to me how his rich, lyrical and evocative music has not found a more prominent place in world stages and general awareness.
I find the String Quartet medium as the best medium to encounter style of a composer. All ideas have to come fore without any masks or places for hiding. Counterpoint folds and reveals harmonic language, lyric inclination, sense of color and temperament.
