About Six for a Dance
Six for a Dance is a 2½‑minute miniature for solo guitar, composed in 2000 and dedicated to Aaron Larget‑Caplan. The piece imagines a female dancer whose movements shift between energetic bursts and moments of poised stillness. Structured in a fast–slow–fast design, the work contrasts lively rhythmic motion with a central section inspired by the sound and character of the Ud, the Mediterranean lute. The result is a compact, expressive vignette that blends dance‑like vitality with a brief, introspective detour into a different musical world.
For the Performers
Level: Suitable for professional guitarists and advanced guitar students.
Programming: Ideal as a short, characterful interlude in a recital, a contemporary miniature within a larger program, or part of a set of modern guitar works.
Style: Rhythmic, energetic outer sections; lyrical, Ud‑inspired middle section.
Program Notes
In Six for a Dance, I envisioned a female dancer performing with energetic movements. The piece is structured in three sections: fast, slow, fast. During the slow segments, I drew inspiration from the sound and character of the Ud, the lute’s Mediterranean cousin.
Six for a Dance is dedicated to Aaron Larget-Caplan.
