About Toward Stillness
Toward Stillness is a 10‑minute work for horn and piano that turns inward, searching for calm in a world overwhelmed by noise, conflict, and emotional strain. Composed in 2024, the piece grows out of a personal practice of meditation and yoga — a deliberate slowing of breath and thought in order to reconnect with clarity and inner quiet. The music unfolds with spaciousness and restraint: the horn speaks from a distance, almost like an echo of the self, while the piano offers a grounded, contemplative landscape. Together, they trace a path from restlessness toward serenity, inviting performers and listeners into a state of stillness.
For the Performers
Level: Ideal for professional horn players and advanced university or conservatory performers seeking contemporary repertoire with expressive depth and refined control.
Programming: Perfect for recitals, competition programs, auditions, and contemporary chamber‑music concerts. Its introspective character offers a compelling contrast within mixed programs.
Style: Slow‑moving, contemplative writing that demands sustained tone, nuanced phrasing, and a sense of inward focus. The horn often feels like a distant, meditative voice.
Venue Fit: Works beautifully in intimate recital halls or acoustically warm spaces where subtle dynamic shading and resonance can be fully appreciated.
Performance Notes: Requires exceptional breath control, soft‑dynamic stability, and sensitivity to pacing. The piano part provides a grounded, spacious environment — ensemble balance and shared stillness are essential.
Program Notes
Toward Stillness for French Horn and piano contrasts sharply with the harsh realities the composer faced in 2023 and 2024 - war, political upheaval, a restless society, and a lack of respect for others and for nature. As in previous years, he immersed himself in the practice of Yoga and meditation, constantly seeking a deep connection with both body and soul. There - when all thoughts cease spinning and the minutiae of life are set aside - true peace resides. To reach this state of nirvana, one must slow down and aim for stillness. Accordingly, the music is slow, questioning, standing, and then moving. The horn remains expressively distant, like a voice coming from afar.
