Lior Navok is a renowned contemporary music composer and pianist whose works have been performed in major venues such as Carnegie Hall, Berlin Philharmonie, Sydney Opera House, and Deutsche Oper Berlin. His music is celebrated for its expressive clarity, narrative depth, and emotional resonance.
Described by The Boston Globe as “colorful, haunting, accomplished, and exciting,” Navok’s compositions have been presented by leading opera houses and orchestras including Oper Frankfurt, Staatstheater Nürnberg, NDR Radiophilharmonie, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Cantata Singers, and Orchestre de l’Opéra de Rouen Normandie. He has collaborated with distinguished conductors such as Gianandrea Noseda, Pablo Heras‑Casado, Ludwig Carrasco, Laurant Gendre, Peter Tilling, and David Hoose.
His chamber and ensemble works have been performed by groups including Callithumpian Consort, Collage New Music, Ensemble TIMF, Telegraph Quartet, Ensemble SORI, Doric String Quartet, Auréole Trio, Klenke Quartet, Cepromusic Ensemble, Pentaèdre Wind Quintet, Hindemith Wind Quintet, Racher Saxophone Quartet, Borromeo String Quartet, and Forum Voix Etouffées.
Navok’s catalogue of over 90 works spans opera, orchestral music, chamber music, solo works, vocal cycles, and stage productions. His operas include An Unserem Fluss, reflecting on the Middle East conflict, and The Bet, based on Anton Chekhov’s short story. His stage works for children, such as The Little Mermaid and The Adventures of Pinocchio, demonstrate his ability to engage audiences of all ages. The oratorio And The Trains Kept Coming… offers a poignant reflection on the Holocaust. His music has also inspired numerous choreographers.
As a pianist, Navok has released several solo albums, including Urban Nocturnes, Time Junctions, and Inner Landscapes. Additional recordings, including The Old Photo Box, appear on Naxos, Centaur, and other labels.
Navok’s contributions to contemporary classical music have been recognized through numerous awards and commissions. He has received support from the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, Fromm Music Foundation, and the Lili Boulanger Memorial Fund. His honors include the Israel Prime Minister Award (2002, 2010), multiple ACUM awards, Alea III Composition Competition First Prize, ASCAP Awards, Boston Modern Orchestra Project/NEC Composition Competition First Prize, Golden Feather Award, Illinois State University Composition Competition First Prize, Massachusetts Cultural Council Composition Award, Omaha Symphony Composition Award (First Prize), and the Young Composer’s Competition at Austin Peay University. His artistic development has been enriched by residencies at the Tanglewood Music Center, Cité Internationale des Arts, Aspen Music Festival, and the MacDowell Colony.
Navok is also the author of the children’s book Brave Little Timmy.
