The Waiting Hours (2025)

Piano works by Lior Navok

Three compositions written between 1994 and 1997 reveal contrasting facets of Lior Navok’s musical language, each shaped by its own aesthetic, technique, and stylistic identity. Quartet for Flute, Clarinet, Bassoon and Harp (1994), composed for harpist Gittit Boasson, is an early work rooted in a tonal harmonic world influenced by French impressionism and jazz. Its unusual instrumentation opens a wide palette of colors, allowing delicate and unexpected sonorities to emerge.

Composed two years later, Hidden Reflections for Alto Saxophone and Piano marks a shift in direction. While the musical language evolves, the core elements—expressive melodic writing, rich harmonic textures, and rhythmic vitality—remain central. The piece was written for saxophonist Styliani Tartsinis.

Voices From India — String Quartet No. 1 (1997) draws on techniques from classical Indian music introduced to Navok by Peter Row, a highly respected authority on the tradition in the United States. Inspired by these musical concepts, Navok used Indian classical elements as a catalyst for the quartet, creating a meeting point between Eastern and Western musical worlds.
