YEAR COMPOSED: 2001
Elegy to the Future (2001) by Lior Navok is a 13-minute work for Pierrot ensemble written during a period of escalating violence in Tel Aviv. Completed shortly after September 11, the piece reflects sorrow, restlessness, and fear for the future. Near the end, fragments of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23, K. 488, appear as a symbol of innocence overshadowed by darkness. Commissioned by and dedicated to David Hoose and Collage New Music, the work offers a powerful, emotionally charged addition to the contemporary Pierrot ensemble repertoire.
