HIDDEN REFLECTIONS
for clarinet and piano
A Contemporary Work for Clarinet and Piano
Hidden Reflections (1996) by Lior Navok is a 15-minute composition for clarinet in A and piano, adapted from an earlier version for alto saxophone. Highlighting the instrument’s expressive range, agility, and lyricism, the two-movement work contrasts a grotesque, rhythmically shifting march with a nostalgic, meditative reflection, offering a compelling addition to the contemporary clarinet and piano repertoire.

About the Piece
Hidden Reflections was originally written for saxophonist Styliani Tartsinis, who premiered and recorded the saxophone version. The clarinet version adapts the work’s expressive range to the clarinet’s warm timbre and fluid phrasing. The piece unfolds in two contrasting movements. The first is an unstable, grotesque march shifting between odd and steady meters, while the second is nostalgic and meditative, inspired by the quiet snowfall of a Boston winter night in 1996. It is a strong choice for professional players and advanced conservatory students preparing clarinet and piano recitals or image‑driven programs.
