"Dunes" - music for unaccompanied flute

About Dunes

Dunes is a 5‑minute work for solo flute inspired by the shifting shapes and quiet transformations of wind‑formed sand. The piece moves between stillness and motion, using subtle changes of color, articulation, and contour to evoke a landscape in constant flux. Written for flutist Abigail Dolan, it offers a compact, expressive study in breath, resonance, and fluid line.

For the Performers

Level: Suitable for advanced students and professional flutists; the writing focuses on color, breath control, and shaping long lines rather than extreme virtuosity.

Programming:
Ideal for contemporary recitals, nature‑themed programs, meditative sets, gallery concerts, and as a contrasting modern miniature within mixed programs.

Competitions & Auditions: Effective for competitions valuing tone, phrasing, and interpretive nuance; its concise duration makes it easy to program as a required contemporary work.

Extended Techniques: None required — the piece relies on traditional flute writing shaped through subtle expressive detail.

Venue Fit: Works especially well in intimate or resonant spaces.

Program Notes

In my mind, I envisioned dunes that continuously shift in shape under the influence of the wind's direction. Sometimes, these changes occur rapidly, while at other times, amidst a serene breeze, the dunes remain motionless. Dunes is dedicated to flutist Abigail Dolan.
