About Periscopes
Periscopes is a 30‑minute cycle of twelve piano miniatures inspired by the image of a friendly submarine rising to the ocean’s surface in search of discovery. Each time the periscope emerges, it reveals a new scene — playful, mysterious, lyrical, or atmospheric. Rather than forming a continuous narrative, the pieces function as independent vignettes, each with its own sonic world and character. Written in 2009, the cycle blends imagination with concise musical storytelling, offering pianists a wide palette of colors, gestures, and moods.
For the Performers
Level: Ideal for professional pianists; also suitable for advanced students exploring character pieces, coloristic writing, and imaginative interpretation.
Programming: Works well as a full cycle or as selected movements within contemporary recitals, themed programs, or teaching studios focusing on modern miniatures.
Competitions / Auditions: Suitable for competitions and auditions that value expressive clarity, character definition, and the ability to shift quickly between contrasting moods.
Style: Twelve compact vignettes ranging from whimsical to introspective, each presenting a distinct musical environment.
