Simultaneously, I was bothered by the decrease of music written for the Bassoon during the 20th century and it was important for me to make my small contribution by writing a Bassoon Concerto. Somehow, these two intentions met together in “The Spanish Songs.” While looking for poems, I had in mind few criterion such as specific subject, mood, and length. It was also important that one of the poems will start as a question. After eight months of searching, I found Antonio Machado’s poems. The score calls for soprano and bassoon, two clarinets, harp, celesta, percussion and strings. Poems and specific performers help the composer decide on that musical direction or another. Here, I decided to take a more traditional path, adding my view of Spanish music. VIEW SCORE LISTEN Soprano and Orchestra | Soprano and chamber orchestra | Spanish poems

  • Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano | Clarinet, Cello and Piano Repertoire | Contemporary Music

TRIO FOR CLARINET, CELLO AND PIANO | CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FOR CLARINET, CELLO AND PIANO Like a Whirling Sand Clock for clarinet , cello and piano Duration: 10.5 minutes Instrumentation: clarinet, cello and piano Year Composed: 2006 Written For: Chen Halevi Commissioned by: In memory of Adele and John Gray Premiere Performance: 31 March, 2007 Tel Aviv, Israel Chen Halevi, clarinet Anssi Karttunen, cello Ofra Yitzhaki, piano TRIO FOR CLARINET, CELLO AND PIANO VIEW SCORE LISTEN TRIO FOR CLARINET, CELLO AND PIANO REPERTOIRE Program Notes: While composing Like a Whirling Sand Clock for clarinet, cello and piano, I was occupied with the notion of leaking time process, which is a microcosmos of a larger process, best to be described as going back in time. In September 2006, I feel that the world is standing on a pivot point: on one hand, the various religious and political forces insist on rooting themselves deeper and deeper into what they see as the only truth, while in reality such ideas and especially the religious ones are extremely fundamentalist, reactionary and ill-minded. For me, such clashes of ideas and ideals are reminiscences of the dark middle-ages days and the crusades, where people killed people because of blind belief. Yet, in our days, with sophisticated mass destruction tools as developed most efficiently by humanity, one asks himself towards where we are heading and what will bring tomorrow. The feeling of evaporating, leaking time gets stronger and stronger while our era’s events remind more and more what history books tells us. While imagining an ever-whirling sand clock that drops its sand grains one by one while the sand pile is collected at the upper tube and not the lower one, (thus indicating a going back in time process), one can imagine visually what I have tried to portrait with sounds. Like a Whirling Sand Clock was generously commissioned in memory of Adele and John Gray for clarinetist Chen Halevi. The piece is in two movements: First, “The March of the _______!!!” is an impression of a grotesque march and alternates between odd and steady meters. The second movement, “The Evening of the First Snow” is nostalgic and meditative, inspired by the falling snowflakes in one evening of Bostonian winter, as I experienced it in 1996. The syllables sa, re, ma, ga, pa, dha (not used here) and ni are equal to our do, re, mi. Shadowphobia , as the name implies, deals with the relationship between a person and his/her shadow. CHAMBER CHOIR, CHORUS, HARMONICA, PERCUSSION AND PIANO MEDITATIONS OVER SHORE for soli, choir and small ensemble Duration: 14 minutes Instrumentation: soli (SATB), double chamber choir, double large choir, harmonica, percussion (2) and piano Year Composed: 1997 Text: mainly vocalize, with one sentence from a poem by H.N. Bialik Language: Vocalize, Hebrew Written For: Tamara Brooks Premiere Performance: 22 April, 1998, Boston, MA, USA The New England Conservatory Chamber Singers and Chorus Mike Turk, harmonica Eliko Akahori, piano Jessica Cooper, Timur Rubinshteyn, percussion Tamara Brooks, conductor VIEW SCORE LISTEN SHOP / HIRE MUSIC Program Notes: Meditations Over Shore is a one day journey along the shore. Being far from homeland, many memories about the shore on the other side of the ocean came to my mind. While walking on the shore, one can hear the murmur of the waves, buoy bells, rain and foghorns – all found their way into the score. For most of the time, the soloists and chorus do not sing text, but rather breathe and hum. I decided to use only one line of text, after a poem by H.N. Bialik – one of Israels’s most important poets: “Me’ever La-Yam” (Beyond the sea.) For the premiere of “Meditations Over Shore”, I used buoy bells that were borrowed from the Rhode Island Coast Guard. When the buoy bells are too hard to get, other kind of bell (with no clapper), metal plate, or small tam tams may substitute. Meditations Over Shore was written for conductor Tamara Brooks and the New England Conservatory chamber singers and chorus. At the same time, the surroundings itself – the water, was for most of the time peaceful in its nature, dark blue, mysterious, full of shadows and reflections from above the surface. The two marimbas, with their mysterious, haunting, yet dry tone create these altering waves – changing their intensity, their direction and their relation to the surrounding water. These waves often leave the depth and continue their movement above the surface. On its turn, the surrounding water, or musically speaking the orchestra is responsive to the play of the waves – moving along with them loosing and gaining tranquility. …of weaving the shadowed waves was commissioned in memory of Adele and John Gray for the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Gala concert – 9 November 2003, Carnegie Hall. It was written for PercaDu – Adi Morag and Tomer Yariv, percussionists and The Tel-Aviv Soloists Ensemble conducted by Barak Tal. With many thanks to Gideon Paz, who initiated the creation of this composition. I asked myself how and when it would end. Then came September 11, 2001 and my previous thoughts received an even greater dimension. This piece, which was completed in September 26, 2001, deals with the sorrow, restlessness and fear for the future, caused by such events. Toward the end of the piece, one can hear fragments from the second movement of Mozart Piano Concerto No. 23, K. 488.For me, this fragment represents the understanding that things will never be the same again and that the pure is now shadowed in darkness. Elegy to the Future was commissioned by, and is dedicated to David Hoose, and Collage New Music. VIEW SCORE LISTEN Additional Music for Pierrot Ensemble 9/11 CHAMBER MUSIC| MUSIC INSPIRED BY 9/11
