Lior Navok a en effet confié sa délicieuse mise en musique des Aventures de Pinocchio à une petite formation instrumentale – un quintette à vent et piano. Que la musique commence! Débute alors une escapade enchanteresse dans le monde imaginaire de Carlo Collodi. Une traduction fluide du conte moraliste et néanmoins nuancé de l’écrivain italien, réalisée par Stéphane Mooser, est narrée avec entrain et brio par Benjamin Knobil et ses deux comparses, Salvatore Orlando et Céline Cesa, finement mis en scène par Geneviève Pasquier. Entouré d’une farandole d’astucieux effets spéciaux et de diverses marionnettes – inventées par Christophe Kiss façon Théâtre Guignol –, le fougueux pantin de bois, qui aspire à devenir un véritable petit garçon, a fort à faire pour surmonter les écueils que la paresse et l’avidité présentent à tout un chacun. Alors que son jeune auditoire fasciné l’encourage de ses rires et ses avertissements, Pinocchio accédera finalement à son humanité. Non sans avoir été préalablement la victime naïve du Chat et du Renard, avoir été transformé en bourricot et avoir plongé dans un océan, de bulles de savon, pour retrouver finalement son papa Gepetto dans le ventre d’une baleine. Sensiblement connotée par la démarche narrative et pédagogique de grands prédécesseurs – Saint-Saëns et son Carnaval des animaux ou Prokofiev et son Pierre et le Loup –, la musique de Lior Navok, présent pour le baptême public de la version française de son œuvre, n’en demeure pas moins originale. Un traitement quasi jazzy, ou même impressionniste, de la narration pare la fable d’une dimension onirique, bourrée de fantaisie et d’humour. Usually, these visual images fascinate our eyes, as their continuous formation is truly harmonious and somewhat mysterious. Yet, the endless formations are not necessarily easy to catch or view sharply. These blurred formations in their visual sense, intrigued me to search for their sonic equivalence. Through ever-changing clusters, vague arpeggiations and occasional chromatic melody, I tried to translate my images into sound. In some cases the blur is thick and dark, and in some cases thin, light and spacious. Both the accordion and guitar contribute to the clearness and the blurriness of the formations, each with its own unique timbre. At that time, while living both worlds of classical music and jazz I was aiming for a piece based on the contrast between orchestra and soloist, with strong rhythmic contrasts, changing meters and mood. The clarinet, with its wide range of expression abilities ranging from a soft and melancholic to bold and humorous, was the natural choice. ​ The concerto is written within the traditional frame of fast, slow, fast. Sometimes, the clarinet has a dialogue with the orchestra, sometimes it is part of it. Most of her poems are full with detailed descriptions, transferring the poems to a medium of picture, carefully painted and calculated. Yet, it is quiet amazing that these poems came from the hand of a woman who lived secluded life, in her hometown Amherst, Massachusetts. A clue may be finds in one of Dickinson’s saying: “To shut our eyes is to travel.” ​ As I approached Dickinson’s poems (which are close to 2000), I found that most of them, even the short ones, are built into a large space. Each poem needs its development time and cannot be rushed or squeezed to a regular song form. In “The Sea of Sunset,” I have let the words, the nature description, and the lazy mood of the poem take me to the picture medium. Adding the murmur of the sea, and the whisper of the wind, I tried to get as close as possible to the picture I saw through the poem.
