Many people were waiting, some are still waiting for some news and information: who is alive and who is not? who was kidnapped and who is safe? Would the next bomb destroy this house or that house? Hearing the airplanes, following the news, anxious waiting. ​ November 2023 ​ Background: On October 7, 2023, a shocking attack was launched by the Palestinian group Hamas on Israel, which has been described as the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust . The assault, named Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, began at dawn during the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah . Hamas launched a massive barrage of rockets into southern Israel, with sirens heard as far away as Tel Aviv and Beersheba . The group claimed to have launched 5,000 rockets in the initial barrage . This rocket attack served as a cover for an unprecedented multipronged infiltration of fighters into Israel . The attackers breached security barriers separating Gaza and Israel, and some even used powered parachutes and motorboats . They targeted enemy positions, airports, and military fortifications . Palestinian fighters penetrated at least three military installations around the frontier . The attack resulted in the death of approximately 1,200 people , and involved widespread sexual violence . At least 300 were killed, 1,590 injured, and hostages were taken in this multi-pronged infiltration from Gaza . ​ In response to the attack, Israel’s military carried out attacks in Gaza . The conflict that followed has been marked by atrocities against civilians, including the murder of women and children . The string quartet, being a unified, homogeneous medium on its own right, surround the piano and give it a generous permission to act like a concerto soloist. Nonetheless, the beauty of this medium is found in its chamber-music qualities, where all members express themselves as individuals and therefore create delicate and intimate musical moments. While writing my Piano Quintet (2000), I tried to integrate all these elements. It consists of three movements which are closely related thematically. The first movement, marked poco rubato e tranquillo , introduces one of the quintet's main motives. Right after the introduction, the movement takes a sharp turn into a faster tempo and a passionate character. A fast and determined scherzo brings out the light and virtuosic side of the ensemble. The last movement, adagio tenero is the most extended of the three and acts like an echo of the previous movements. The Piano Quintet was underwritten by the American Composer Forum, with funds provided by the Jerome Foundation. As an Israeli myself, I always find it hard to explain to European /American people where is the real tragedy, the one of the individual person – not the one behind the “selected” pictures one sees on the TV screen or see in any other media. The music describes the fear, hate, anger, love, remorse, the claustrophobic and uncertain feeling of being under daily attack (no matter in what side one is.) I believe that without the hope for a real peaceful solution and for a better life, things would have been much worse – the hope is what keeps people alive. Yet, between one hopeful chapter to another, the reality hits once more – more innocent victims die and more families are being destroyed, on a daily basis. Most of the stories of these individual victims never reach the international media, who ironically enough look only for “big numbers.” The viola represents such an individual who faces reality on its cruel side. Hoping, lamenting, loving, tendering, and accepting the sad reality… The quartet consists of connected sections that depict the brutal fate that occurs and the acceptance of fate as a natural part of life, the emotional whirlpools, the instability, the fighting, the lamenting emotion, the distanced and cold emotion, the hope, the disillusion, the farewell, and the recurring destiny, moving on to the next victim. ​ There are few short thematic fragments and motives which are repeated in different variations to create a stronger emotional feeling towards the end of the quartet. Some of these short motives include the half scale of the Arabic “Maqam Hijaz”, as well as short fragments from Jewish Music. Funny enough, both motives are aurally and historically closely related. Despite the highly charged subject, I chose to restrain the emotional level of expression. Therefore, except for a few short emotional bursts, the audience will perceive a somewhat cold, filtered expression, as if they are watching a show from behind a glass. ​ String Quartet no. 2 – “Hope Cycles” was written for Borromeo String Quartet, The Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation in the Library of Congress and dedicated to the memory of Serge and Natalie Koussevitzky.
