MUSIC IN RESPONSE TO THE 10.7 ATTACK IN ISRAEL THE WAITING HOURS for solo piano Duration: 14 minutes Instrumentation: piano solo Year Composed: 2023 ​ ​ ​ LISTEN Note Click for a demo recording (low quality) Program Notes: ​ The Waiting Hours The horrible events that took place on 7 October, 2023 in Israel and the war that started right after, brought me to compose a new piece for solo piano, The Waiting Hours. Many people were waiting, some are still waiting for some news and information: who is alive and who is not? who was kidnapped and who is safe? Would the next bomb destroy this house or that house? Hearing the airplanes, following the news, anxious waiting. ​ November 2023 ​ Background: On October 7, 2023, a shocking attack was launched by the Palestinian group Hamas on Israel, which has been described as the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust . The assault, named Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, began at dawn during the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah . Hamas launched a massive barrage of rockets into southern Israel, with sirens heard as far away as Tel Aviv and Beersheba . The group claimed to have launched 5,000 rockets in the initial barrage . This rocket attack served as a cover for an unprecedented multipronged infiltration of fighters into Israel . The attackers breached security barriers separating Gaza and Israel, and some even used powered parachutes and motorboats . They targeted enemy positions, airports, and military fortifications . Palestinian fighters penetrated at least three military installations around the frontier . The attack resulted in the death of approximately 1,200 people , and involved widespread sexual violence . At least 300 were killed, 1,590 injured, and hostages were taken in this multi-pronged infiltration from Gaza . ​ In response to the attack, Israel’s military carried out attacks in Gaza . The conflict that followed has been marked by atrocities against civilians, including the murder of women and children . The war has left a significant impact on both sides, marking a dark chapter in the history of the Israel-Hamas conflict. It is associated with parting, death, and sadness. After a Tango , portrays these elements, without any attempt to follow the gestures of the traditional dance. Nevertheless, the attentive listener will discover fragments and reminiscences of the Argentinean Tango. The instrumentation, suggests Tango sonorities, thanks to the violin, guitar, double bass and percussion. Now and again the light will travel fast, as car lights on a highway, sometimes it will travel slowly, like a dim spot coming from a distant ship. The intensity of light can range from a flickering candlelight to an intense bright beam that temporarily blinds the eyes. It can be direct or non-direct, it can flicker, shimmer, dim, increase, expand, focus… It can be masked by a cloud or fog, then reappear in a different form or intensity. It can wear different colors – white, blue, yellowish beam, reddish beam… from different materials – fire, electricity, gas… The first and third movements explore the fast and more direct light sources, while the middle movement explores the mysterious aspect of a distant-nearby light. From my studio which was sited in the midst of the forest I could hear remote sounds that came from the nearby pond: Frog Peepers created a most haunting sound texture, the sounds of night birds and the distant howls. My mind started to work towards imagining the pond and its mysterious atmosphere at different times of the day, but especially from dusk to sunrise. I imagined small episodes, involving the water creatures, their sounds, the lighting, rustle of the leaves and the whisper of the water. All these created a continuum of musical scenes, woven one into the other. Mysterious Pond was written for flutist Eyal Ein Habar and oboist Dudu Carmel. For a long time, I felt that writing music that I could immediately improvise was artificial and useless.
