Being far from homeland, many memories about the shore on the other side of the ocean came to my mind. While walking on the shore, one can hear the murmur of the waves, buoy bells, rain and foghorns – all found their way into the score. For most of the time, the soloists and chorus do not sing text, but rather breathe and hum. I decided to use only one line of text, after a poem by H.N. Bialik – one of Israels’s most important poets: “Me’ever La-Yam” (Beyond the sea.) For the premiere of “Meditations Over Shore”, I used buoy bells that were borrowed from the Rhode Island Coast Guard. When the buoy bells are too hard to get, other kind of bell (with no clapper), metal plate, or small tam tams may substitute. Meditations Over Shore was written for conductor Tamara Brooks and the New England Conservatory chamber singers and chorus. Usually, these visual images fascinate our eyes, as their continuous formation is truly harmonious and somewhat mysterious. Yet, the endless formations are not necessarily easy to catch or view sharply. These blurred formations in their visual sense, intrigued me to search for their sonic equivalence. Through ever-changing clusters, vague arpeggiations and occasional chromatic melody, I tried to translate my images into sound. In some cases the blur is thick and dark, and in some cases thin, light and spacious. Both the accordion and guitar contribute to the clearness and the blurriness of the formations, each with its own unique timbre. In September 2006, I feel that the world is standing on a pivot point: on one hand, the various religious and political forces insist on rooting themselves deeper and deeper into what they see as the only truth, while in reality such ideas and especially the religious ones are extremely fundamentalist, reactionary and ill-minded. For me, such clashes of ideas and ideals are reminiscences of the dark middle-ages days and the crusades, where people killed people because of blind belief. Yet, in our days, with sophisticated mass destruction tools as developed most efficiently by humanity, one asks himself towards where we are heading and what will bring tomorrow. The feeling of evaporating, leaking time gets stronger and stronger while our era’s events remind more and more what history books tells us. While imagining an ever-whirling sand clock that drops its sand grains one by one while the sand pile is collected at the upper tube and not the lower one, (thus indicating a going back in time process), one can imagine visually what I have tried to portrait with sounds. Like a Whirling Sand Clock was generously commissioned in memory of Adele and John Gray for clarinetist Chen Halevi. For me, Saxophone Quartet music is also the closest to the human choir. While writing my saxophone quartet, I felt intrigued to explore the technical, timbral, rhythmic, and lyrical aspects of the ensemble. The four saxophones can create a homogeneous texture, but can also express their own individuality and uniqueness. Therefore, the quartet consists of five movements, and four recitatives, one for each saxophone. The recitatives’ purpose is double: to feature one saxophone a time on one hand, and lead to the next movement on the other. Saxophone Quartet was commissioned by the Fromm Music Foundation and received its first performance by the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet. It tells the tale of the little mermaid, the young daughter of the sea king, who at the age of 15 leaves the deep waters to explore the haunting sea surface and saves a prince from drowning when his ship is struck by a storm. She falls in love with the prince but cannot reach him or talk to him. Deeply in love with the prince, she decides to consult the sea-witch, who gives her human legs in exchange for her beautiful voice. The sea-witch also tells her that if the prince marries another girl, the Little Mermaid will turn into sea foam the day after the wedding. The Little Mermaid agrees. ​ Able to walk, she finally meets the prince and radiates happiness. The prince, though he likes the Little Mermaid, does not know that she is the one who saved his life from drowning. He plans to marry another girl—a princess. A wedding voyage to a distant kingdom is arranged, and the wedding is set. Desperately in love, the Little Mermaid fears for her life and asks only to return home to her family. Suddenly, her sisters appear out of the surface of the water. They offer her a knife and encourage her to kill the prince and save her life. She approaches the sleeping prince but cannot bring herself to kill him. The next morning, she turns into sea foam, yet suddenly feels herself being carried up to the sky to become a fairy. As a good fairy, she watches over the prince from above and protects him. The Old Castle at Dusk is the longest movement of the piece, in which I tried to explore other timbres of this standard instrumentation. Two Gong beats connect this movement to the Elegy . As for the Drunken Ballerinas , my Image was of few dancers who dance while being influenced by alcohol. Darkness is an atmosphere movement, reflecting wondering.
