While being surrounded by wild nature at its best, writing a trio for flute, viola and harp seemed to me as the most natural thing – as unification between music and the mountains, the woods and the rivers. Because of these external influences, as well as the trio’s delicate instrumentation, Veiled Echoes is in most of the cases airy and with delicate texture. In many places, the rhythm of the piece tends to be flexible, just like a leaf carried by the wind. Veiled Echoes is consisted of three movements: the first brings nostalgia and remembrances. Number of musical motives which are introduced here will reappear and be developed in the following movements. This movement ends like a music-box that grows slower and slower. The second movement is the dreamiest of the three. It was written while trying to create a harmony with the rustle of the wind and the flow of the river. In this movement, I was not searching for musical continuity, but planted musical events one after the other while creating a static atmosphere. The third movement comes to demonstrate the energetic potential found in the trio’s instrumentation and to present the virtuosity of the players. In this movement, the listener would find motives fro the first movement alongside new motives. Veiled Echoes was written for Ensemble Lumina and is dedicated to them. Keep moving 2. Gutter People 3. Getting busy 4. Keeping busy DOUBLE WIND QUINTET VIEW SCORE LISTEN VIDEO SCORE-VIDEO Program Notes: Tetris — for double wind quintet, was written during fall 2009 in New York City. The city, with its fast pace of life, neurotic flowing, continuous stream of people, traffic and information, serves as the inspiration for this piece. Watching from the side, the fast-moving people appeared to me like robots controlled by an above force, mechanically moving from one place to another, fighting against the clock, against the part of the brain that says – “Relax!” and against each other. Surviving amidst a jungle of brick walls and tall buildings. It seemed to me that people could not enjoy a full basic inhale exhale process. Good breathing consumes too much time. People were constantly looking for ways to juggle between many things at the same time. They seemed to me like Tetris players who try to match the bricks to a certain pattern, constantly in demand to increase speed. Though to the stranger this pace of life looks fascinating and exciting, I felt that deep inside things look a bit different, quite tragic. The piece consists of four connected sections: Keep moving, Gutter People, Getting busy and Keeping busy. The first and fourth movements refer to the continuous, breathless pace of life. Restless people are the subject of the third movement, a short satire. The second movement is inspired by the thousands of people who spend all their lives in the cellar of a restaurant or shop after immigrating from far away, only to serve the ever-hurrying people above them. Tetris was written for the Hindemith Woodwind Quintet. It was commissioned by the Hochschule für Musik, Mainz with kind support from the Annie Eisler Lehmenn Stiftung. The Old Castle at Dusk is the longest movement of the piece, in which I tried to explore other timbres of this standard instrumentation. Two Gong beats connect this movement to the Elegy . As for the Drunken Ballerinas , my Image was of few dancers who dance while being influenced by alcohol. Darkness is an atmosphere movement, reflecting wondering. The last movement is the fight of the Triangle for its independence, while neither completely understood nor accepted by his colleagues. VIEW SCORE LISTEN music for pierrot ensemble

My feeling for the disappearing tradition came mainly during a visit to Córdoba and Sevilla, where the alleys seemed to tell me the old story of the long-gone local communities. I could imagine a flourishing and vivid community, which after 1492 had to flee in every direction, bringing its language and tradition into new places such as Greece and Bulgaria. The music tells the story of a troubadour – a folk singer, who passes from village to village, town to town in search of a certain song, while many fragments of other songs, prayers and chants appear before him. These include Jewish prayers, traditional Ladino – Judæo-Espagnol songs, talking, story-telling, as well as influences of the Christianity and Islam, since during the Golden Age in Andalucía all three religions have skilled to live peacefully and enriched each other. All the recorded fragments are fully authentic, giving stage to old men and women who have been asked to sing songs as remembered from childhood. They are/were probably the last link in a long chain, since these songs, language and expressions were not transmitted fully (if at all) to the next generation. I am grateful for the work of Dr. Shoshana Weich-Shahak who, as a life-long project had traced singers and possible informants, made these recordings with such dedication and passion and most kindly, allowed me to use fragments of them. Thus, the work as a whole is a passage through time, where voices, sounds, images from the past appear before our troubadour, who does not end his wondering until discovering his long-waited song – La Serena. In additional to the authentic recordings, one may find the sounds of soprano, oud, laud, recorders, viola da gamba, percussion and additional guitar, which were all recorded separately and went through a sound manipulation. This is in additional to field recordings that I have done in Spain. I would like to thank and credit the following people: Monica Garcia-Albea, soprano Lara Morris, recorders Myrna Herzog, viola da gamba Guy Kark, oud and laud Liat Cohen, classical guitar Avi Agababa, percussion Sound Track Editing and Mixing: Dmitry Lifshitz, Yossi Ron Sound engineers: Eldad Berman (Tel Aviv), Marcus Fritzsch (Berlin), Pierre Fardel (Paris.) Dr. Shoshana Weich-Shahak for her kind support and assistance in locating the authentic recordings. The National Sound Archives (Jerusalem, Israel) Yad Ben-Zvi Library (Jerusalem, Israel) Sebastián de la Obra and Rosana de Aza – Casa De Sefarad (Córdoba) Through the Alleys of Time has been commissioned by the Legacy Heritage Fund, through the America-Israel Cultural Foundation, with dedication to Guitarist Liat Cohen. Additional Information: Tape includes authentic recordings of singers, story-tellers, sounds from South Spain as well as recorded soprano, oud, lute, viola da gamba, recorders and percussion. CONTEMPORARY PIANO QUINTETS | PIANO QUINTET. | QUINTET FOR PIANO AND STRINGS QUARTET PIANO QUINTET for piano and string quartet Duration: 18 minutes Instrumentation: piano, violins (2), viola and cello Year Composed: 2000 Commissioned by: American Composers Forum, the Jerome Foundation Premiere Performance: Sarah Bob, piano Francine Trester, violin Christina Day, vioin Annette Klein, viola Mickey Katz, cello Movements: 1. poco rubato e tranquillo 2. scherzo 3. adagio tenero CONTEMPORARY PIANO QUINTETS VIEW SCORE LISTEN Program Notes: I have always looked at the Piano Quintet medium as the little cousin of the piano concerto. The string quartet, being a unified, homogeneous medium on its own right, surround the piano and give it a generous permission to act like a concerto soloist. Nonetheless, the beauty of this medium is found in its chamber-music qualities, where all members express themselves as individuals and therefore create delicate and intimate musical moments. While writing my Piano Quintet (2000), I tried to integrate all these elements. It consists of three movements which are closely related thematically. The first movement, marked poco rubato e tranquillo , introduces one of the quintet's main motives. Right after the introduction, the movement takes a sharp turn into a faster tempo and a passionate character. A fast and determined scherzo brings out the light and virtuosic side of the ensemble. The last movement, adagio tenero is the most extended of the three and acts like an echo of the previous movements. The Piano Quintet was underwritten by the American Composer Forum, with funds provided by the Jerome Foundation.
